Puppy Love

...Or temporary insanity?! But who can’t resist those little puppy eyes staring back at you? That’s how my husband and I got sucked into the trance of the lab mix puppy we now share a home with. His name is Hurley, and he’s trouble adorable. I had forgotten how hard bringing home a puppy was…until I brought a home puppy. So I figured I would chronicle all the life lessons we are gaining as they occur in order to assist with anyone else thinking about or finding themselves in possession of with a little furbaby.

Let’s start with how to find the perfect puppy for you. Research the breed BEFORE you buy. A cute Jack Russell Terrier pup who is running, jumping and can’t sit still even to be petted and seems to have energy for days, may not be fitting for a laid back household which loves snuggling on the couch to watch TV and movies. In the same regard, if you are a runner who loves to be outdoors in the Florida sun, then it’s safe to say that a Siberian Husky with its beautiful full coat may have the athletic ability but not the stamina to last through a five-miler in the dead of summer.

A great guide to help find the best breed is or a fun alternative is an online quiz. Also, don’t feel bad stopping people and asking them about their breed. Petsmart is a great place to find dog owners who not only love their pets but don’t mind talking about them.  Speak to your local veterinarian if you don’t feel comfortable walking up to a complete stranger. The vet can also tell you if specific breeds are prone to unique illnesses or conditions. The biggest point being DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

And of course I can’t help but promote adopting a rescue dog. We found our pup through Pet Finder. Our little Hurley was part of a four pup litter that was dropped off at a kill shelter after the previous owner’s dog “surprisingly” had puppies. I am happy to report, however, that all four puppies, two boys and two girls, have found their forever homes. I always was a sucker for a happy ending…sigh.
